L’Escala Anchovy Museum

L’Escorxador Nou is a building in the municipality of L’Escala included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It was inaugurated in 2006 as an institution dedicated to the recovery, conservation and dissemination of the material and intangible cultural heritage of L’Escala, especially the important salting tradition of the town. Through the project “El Fil de la Memòria” we work to preserve and disseminate the oral history of L’Escala. He regularly publishes the magazine Fulls d’Història Local, exhibition catalogs and videos of recordings for the elderly. It is home to the Anchovy and Salt Museum.

The museum has also been organizing the Salt Festival since 1997, the III Centenary of the Alfolí de la Sal. It is the most important event for the dissemination of the intangible heritage of L’Escala, with the involvement of the community and which attracts many visitors for its authenticity. Every third Saturday of September, in the natural setting of the beach of the old port, the town of L’Escala pays homage to the fishing and salting ancestors with a sample of seafaring trades, traditional songs and dances such as the Farandola and the Dragon Dance.
