On June 8th and 9th the Spanish Shepherd Dog Championship was held in l’Estartit with participants coming from all over Spain. The championships were promoted by Jordi Muixach who, thanks to his and his dog Coloma’s brilliant career in the world of sheep dog competitions, is one of the most famous shepherds in Catalonia and beyond. He has many victories in both the national and international championships. This, alongside his charisma and particular skills in the selection and training of the best dogs, make him one of the most emblematic shepherds of Catalonia. The championship took place on a field next to the campsite letting our customers discover the skills of these fantastic dogs herding sheep.

The video was filmed in the Natural park of Montgri, Medes Islands and Baix Ter, where Castell Montgri is situated. The video also features a herd of Albera cows, which have been living near Torre Ponsa, an area owned by Ramon Mascort, the director of the Mascort Grup. Their presence helps to prevent forest fires as they eat the vegetal biomass which in turn avoids it turning combustible in case of a fire.
Wishing you a merry Christmas and a Happy new year! See you soon!!!
This European accreditation is granted to protected natural areas that have demonstrated their commitment to sustainable tourism. The effort of the Mascort Group will not only mean environmental, social and economic benefits for the territory but also advantages for the campsite with cost savings and improvement of the business image. This distinction, in an increasingly competitive tourism market, is only granted to companies that are committed to sustainability, environmental conservation and local development.
The prestigious award will be delivered on January 9 in Utrecht, during the Tourism Fair called “‘Vakantiebeurs”. In Spain there are only two nominated campsites – Camping Castell Montgrí and Camping Sangulí in Salou. ANWB is one of the most important automobile clubs in Europe, with more than 4,5 million members. This year, for the first time, its members have been given the opportunity to vote for the best European campsites. The criteria the sites had to meet were: The best family campsite with the best accommodation, the most attractive and most ecological. The fact that Castell Montgrí is a nominee for this award is a recognition of the improvements that have been made in the campsite in recent years.

Over the last few weeks we have noticed the comeback of red squirrels on the campsite. For a while now they have not been observed and their absence was strange considering there are a large number of pine trees, the natural habitat of squirrels, on the campsite. Squirrels are an emblematic species of the region and a crucial point when deciding which animal would be the mascot for Castell Montgri! Currently, the mascot ’Monti’ entertains children who come to spend their holidays at Camping Castell Montgri.

This species of fish, that lives in marsh areas, is gravely endangered due to the drought in this area but also because of the human urbanisation of their habitatat as well as the introduction by man of the gambusia. In the Pletera Marsh in l’Estartit, around 2 km from the campsite, lives the country’s biggest population of Fartets.
Twenty years ago 15 of those fish were introduced in a pond belonging to the group Mascort. The pond recently underwent some refurbishment which is how we discovered the population of fartets has now reached 150.000.
In order to protect the fish they have been temporarily transferred to one of the swimming pools on site where they will stay until April. They will then be reintroduced to the new Lagoons of La Pletera.
The LifePletera project has become a driving force in the protection of this species in Catalonia.
Camping Castell Montgri and Camping Castell Mar have produced a video to wish all their clients a very merry Christmas!
As is now tradition, the staff from both campsites have joined together to record a video for the end of the year festivities. This year, the video was shot to the beautiful backdrop of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park, where the campsite Castell mar is situated. With this video, we wish you a merry Christmas and happy new year.
See you next year!

The state of the football pitch turf has massively improved thanks to the work done last year. A new underground irrigation system, which brings water directly to the roots, was installed on the pitch.
This gives better strength and durability to the grass as well as keeping the surface dry, thus avoiding erosion of the grass.
During the winter the sheep from the campsite farm pasture on the football Pitch – a natural way of taking care of the pitch maintenance!
This summer, clients of Camping castell Montgri will be able to choose from 3 types of pitches, divided between the ombra and panorama zones.
1-Standard Pitch: situated in the zones Ombra and Panorama, surface area of 70m 2 and 6 amp electrical connection.
2- Comodity Pitch: situated in the Ombra zone, surface area of 90m 2 and 10 amp electrical connection.
3- Comodity Plus Pitch: situated in the Ombra zone, surface area of 120m 2 and 10 amp electrical connection.

The UK MTV show spent a week following an 18-year-old girl and her family (her husband and their two children, 2 years and 6 months respectively) whilst on holiday at the campsite. The program, one of the most popular on MTV, closely follows the daily life of teenage mothers. The couple from Essex live in a camper van. They enjoy the way of life so much that when they travel abroad on holiday they like to stay in a mobile home on a campsite.
Estartit boasts the famous Marine Reserve of the Medes Islands, which is now part of the natural park.
The park is composed of a terrestrial zone, the Aiguamolls and a marine zone. The latter is of great relevance for its biodiversity as it is an area where fishing has been banned for many years. Here you can see many interesting species of fish, gorgonians, marine invertebrates and coral populations.
Guests who wish to explore this nature reserve can do so from Camping Castell Montgrí. We offer different types of excursions and activities.
During the summer in this part of the Costa Brava, it is very frequent to see large groups of starlings. These can be a nuisance to humans particularly because of the noise they make and their depositions. Recently, a few pelegrine falcons have been spotted on the campsite and thanks to their presence , they have been preventing the starlings from roosting in the campsite trees. In this natural way, the falcons have helped limit the problems for our customers. You can witness the acrobatic flights of the falcons from the campsite.
As is now tradition, during the last few weeks camping Castell Montgrí has shot a new video for this summer. Using the famous song “Unforgettable” written by Irving Gordon, and sang by Nat King and Natalie Cole, the video can be seen on all major social networks. We have chosen this song to reflect all the unforgettable moments our clients have experienced during their holidays on Castell Montgri. Susan Bey and Rocco play in the video to which they made a great adaptation . This summer, Susan Bey is playing every Friday at la Bassa. Come and enjoy!
To celebrate the publication of the video a competition has been organised. To participate, you just need to share on our Facebook page photos of your unforgettable holiday moments at Castell Montgri. To win: a weeks accommodation for next season!
The Mascort group, owner of camping Castell Mar and Camping Castell Montgrí, is one of the sponsors of the Sepia project, an initiative that began in the natural park of Montgrí, the Illes medes and the Baix Ter. Its purpose is to restore the population of squid along the Empordà coast. A long time ago these animals were very abundant in the Bay of Pals and Roses, but in recent years there has been a significant reduction in their numbers. There have been three contributing factors for this: the warming of the sea, the contamination of the seabed and, most importantly, overfishing which results in the capture without discrimination of these animals, as well as the destruction of nests before the eggs have hatched.
The Sepia project aims to help counteract the overfishing factor by increasing the number of places where females can lay their eggs, reducing the capture of pregnant females and avoiding the destruction of nests by fishing nets and other equipment. Artisanal fishermen of L’Estartit and L’Escala are actively involved in this project. They work together to maintain the methods of traditional fisheries and encourage sustainable fishing.
Again this year Camping Castell Montgrí and campsite Castell Mar will offer the possibility to book direct excursions to the Catalan capital. The excursions, which include the transfer by bus from the campsite itself, offer various options suchas; the FC Barcelona tour (including pitchside and the Museum), the Barcelona of Gaudí and the magic fountains, amongst others.
Prices : €53 for adults, €48 for +60 years old and €36 for children aged from 3 to 11 years.
If you want to discover Barcelona by yourself , there is a regular bus service from the Sarfa bus company. The bus stop is just in front of the Camping Castell Montgrí. The ticket price is €24.
The new turf was planted a few weeks ago alongside the installation of a new irrigation system which will allow greater resistance and durability of the grass. It is an underground system that brings water directly to the roots. This way the surface doesn’t get wet which prevents the erosion of the grass. Our campsite is one of the few in the Catalan region to possess a natural grass football pitch.
