The Mascort group, owner of camping Castell Mar and Camping Castell Montgrí, is one of the sponsors of the Sepia project, an initiative that began in the natural park of Montgrí, the Illes medes and the Baix Ter. Its purpose is to restore the population of squid along the Empordà coast. A long time ago these animals were very abundant in the Bay of Pals and Roses, but in recent years there has been a significant reduction in their numbers. There have been three contributing factors for this: the warming of the sea, the contamination of the seabed and, most importantly, overfishing which results in the capture without discrimination of these animals, as well as the destruction of nests before the eggs have hatched.
The Sepia project aims to help counteract the overfishing factor by increasing the number of places where females can lay their eggs, reducing the capture of pregnant females and avoiding the destruction of nests by fishing nets and other equipment. Artisanal fishermen of L’Estartit and L’Escala are actively involved in this project. They work together to maintain the methods of traditional fisheries and encourage sustainable fishing.
Again this year Camping Castell Montgrí and campsite Castell Mar will offer the possibility to book direct excursions to the Catalan capital. The excursions, which include the transfer by bus from the campsite itself, offer various options suchas; the FC Barcelona tour (including pitchside and the Museum), the Barcelona of Gaudí and the magic fountains, amongst others.
Prices : €53 for adults, €48 for +60 years old and €36 for children aged from 3 to 11 years.
If you want to discover Barcelona by yourself , there is a regular bus service from the Sarfa bus company. The bus stop is just in front of the Camping Castell Montgrí. The ticket price is €24.
The new turf was planted a few weeks ago alongside the installation of a new irrigation system which will allow greater resistance and durability of the grass. It is an underground system that brings water directly to the roots. This way the surface doesn’t get wet which prevents the erosion of the grass. Our campsite is one of the few in the Catalan region to possess a natural grass football pitch.
This season, customers from the UK and Ireland can benefit from a new shuttle service that is operating between Girona airport and the campsite. This is a pilot project and next year we hope to expand this service by scheduling transfers for departure and arrival times for flights from all over Europe.
It is currently operating to connect with Jet2 flights from the following UK airports: Manchester, East Midlands and Glasgow. From Ireland its scheduled to connect with Ryanair flights from Dublin, Cork and Knock.
Reservations for the shuttle bus can be made directly through this link:
Over the last five months, Girona airport has increased its destinations and frequency of flights to the United Kingdom. Next spring, the airport will have direct links with 13 cities: Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Leeds Bradford, London Stansted, London Luton, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and East Midlands. These services are operated by the airlines Ryanair and Jet2.
In addition, given that both airlines will make the same connections to five destinations (Birmingham, Leeds, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle), the number of routes has risen from 10 in 2016 to a total of 18 for 2017.
These new connections to Girona airport will make it even easier to reach the campsite with a connection from the airport of only 45 minutes.

Camping Castell Montgrí’s football pitch is in the process of transformation to integrate a new irrigation system which will give the grass greater resistance and durability. It is an underground system that irrigates the roots directly. This way the surface is kept dry and so prevents erosion of the grass. It is rare to find a natural grass football pitch on a campsite in Catalonia, ours is!
A very interesting method to prevent fires on the mountain has been put in place near the camping Castell Montgrí. This project takes place in the area of Torre Ponsa (a property owned by the Chairman of our group, Ramon Mascort). For six months a group of 8 cows and an Albera bull feed on and trample the plant biomass to prevent it from becoming a fuel for forest fires.
In the past, large wild herbivores were destroying this ‘fuel’ in a natural way. As this is no longer possible one solution is to use domestic herbivores, in this case the Albera breed of cows.. In this way we also contribute to the preservation of the breed, which, unfortunately, is endangered.
